Yoga for Hope returns this November 27 at Northfield Racquet and Fitness Club!
This is the 12th year of yoga and serving the community and raising funds for HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. This grassroots charity event offers individuals an opportunity to make a difference in their local community by simply participating in yoga.
Ready to strike some of your favourite poses for a day of mindful and relaxing yoga?
It doesn't matter what your level of yoga knowledge is, beginner, intermediate or seriously-bendy, Yoga for Hope is all about bringing the energy together to help elevate those in need in the community.
All proceeds go directly to HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. HopeSpring receives no funding from the government or The Canadian Cancer Society. It relies solely on donations from the community.
I worried about my best friend, Kara. When she found out she had breast cancer, she showed no emotion in her voice and quickly wanted to talk about anything but cancer. She’s always been such a happy positive person and I’ve loved that, but her denial made me so frustrated. We’ve been best friends since high school and I just wanted what’s best for her.
When I brought it up, she complained I was too depressing. It drove me crazy. She wasn’t listening to me and began to not return my calls. My husband said I was being pushy, but I thought if no one is going to make her see what she’s doing then I have to keep trying. It felt like no one saw what I was seeing.
When she wouldn’t research the treatments, I knew I needed to be the one to find out, so I started looking everywhere. That’s when I came across HopeSpring. At first I just wanted to know about the wigs and camisoles but when I walked in there, I felt at home immediately.
Talking with the volunteers, I learned that my friend’s position of denial as a natural response to a cancer diagnosis and the fear that comes with it. That I needed to come along side her and walk with her instead of trying to convince her what she needed to do. A subtle change that helped enormously.
Since learning to be a listener first, we have been have more honest conversations as Kara now has more trust in me to be supportive of what she needs.
She also started to come to some classes at HopeSpring where she’s able to talk with other women going through breast cancer. She can relax as she gets a massage or in the yoga class and it has helped her face her diagnosis on her own terms, and we are so grateful. HopeSpring is there for Emily and Kara, providing a warm, safe sanctuary and a community of people who are going through similar experiences.
The event is open to all adult yoga enthusiasts of all levels of experience. Our goal is for all participants to raise $200 in pledges.
