S.O.A.R. - Supportive Oncology Activities in Recreation (for kids 3-12)

At HopeSpring we understand there is so much more to cancer than the physical diagnosis and treatment.

The children's program S.O.A.R. (supportive oncology activities in recreation) is for children ages 3 to 12 as well as their siblings who are affected by cancer (i.e., in active treatment, who are cancer survivors, or whose parent, grandparent or sibling may be experiencing a cancer diagnosis).

S.O.A.R. is the first program of its kind in the Waterloo Region.  The program led by a certified Child Life Specialist, is a supportive environment for play, physical activity, social interaction and creative outlets on a weekly basis.

The S.O.A.R. program consists of a combination of individual play and group activities based on a theme that will be outlined in a newsletter distributed to participants and their parents at the beginning of each session. The sessions are 10 weeks in length and run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

The program also includes age appropriate fun crafts, songs, active group games and stories with weekly unique themes.

In conjunction with this program, HopeSpring also offers a monthly Parents of Children with Cancer support group which meets on the second Tuesday evening of the month.

One mom says: "The childhood cancer world can be a lonely and confusing place for the whole family. Our children spend so many hours in a hospital setting it is so nice to have a fun place to take them. I am so grateful for the S.O.A.R. program."

Our thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for funding S.O.A.R. through the Winter 2013 session, helping us start helping the children facing cancer in Waterloo-Wellington Region.
